Frequently Asked Questions

  • All drakesflakes come prestrung with a string tag for hanging on a tree. Each ornament has a hole pre-drilled into the side at the top and the bottom or an opening in the design at the top and bottom for hanging one flake or multiple flakes together. Ornaments with openings at the top and bottom do not have drilled holes. Take the ornament out of the bag and use the string tag to hang it on the tree.

If you wish to string multiple drakesflakes together, we recommend using 10 lb. test fishing line, or invisible, white or silver thread. Lay your flakes on a table to decide on the order that you would like to string them. We like to use a ruler or index cards to create consistent spacing between flakes. String the fishing line through the hole and then tie a knot. Continue to use the same fishing line, measure to the next hole, string through the hole, and knot. Trim the fishing line.

Most ornament hooks also work for linking flakes together, or link a hook to a colored ball ornament for added color.

Pro tip: If you are hanging the strings in front of a window with mullions, find the distance between the centers of each smaller pane before you start to string.

  • You can hang drakesflakes from trees, stockings, railings, windows, drapery rods, wreaths, garlands, mantels, ceilings, and chandeliers.

    Pro tips:

Nancy’s mom likes to hang her drakesflakes in the sidelights on her front door using mini-suction cups. Drake’s mom strings a few flakes together to fill the natural holes between branches on her holiday tree. Drake & Nancy like to hang 11” flakes in the centers of wreaths and use ribbon at different lengths to hang the flakes on the chandelier over the table.

  • No polishing required! They are aluminum and specially polished so they will stay bright and shiny year after year.

  • Drakesflakes come in reusable bags which can be used over time. The best part is they don’t take up much room so they are easy to store in small spaces.

Pro tip: Some customers use a small box and layer the flakes like a sandwich: packaging, flake, packaging, flake…you get the idea. Small pieces of fabric like flannel protect the flakes from rubbing against each other as well.

  • First there was a single drakesflake designed by Drake as a gift for his mom. When she asked for more the next year, he decided to begin designing collections. From 2002-2007 there were 12 new drakesflakes each year. Drake realized he had a blizzard on his hands and reduced the new collections to 6 designs per year for a steadier snowfall. As a thank you for growing your collections, we offer Complete Set Pricing at a discount. Sorry, no substitutions.

    *Nope, it isn’t a mistake. There isn’t a 2006 collection.
